Need a vacation? Absolutely! Alaska seems to be one giant national park. Bristling with scenes of natural beauty in all directions. The Great Land is famous for wild adventure but possibly one of the best kept secrets is the Alaska vacation and luxury amenities among a few locations scattered around the state. The best of those is likely the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, AK.
A brief and scenic 45 minute drive from Anchorage’s Ted Stevens International Airport, the quaint ski resort and Alaska Vacation hotspot locals hotspot awaits. Modeled on a Swiss Chalet, the Alyeska Resort is surrounded by deep Spruce forests, and tucked in against a backdrop of silver granite snow capped peaks. Our favorite parts of this Alaska vacation resort are:

- Indoor Saltwater Swimming Pool
Serious Luxury Alaska Vacation Awaits
The Alyeska Nordic Spa was the newest addition to the property, at the time of this post. Furthermore, multiple hot and cold plunge pools offer an extreme experience for improved circulation and relaxation. Several dry, and very hot, saunas line the outer edge of the private and peaceful setting. Consequently, nothing increases my appetite like serious relaxation. My craving for sushi is always satisfied at the Sakura Asian Bistro. Later in the evening, a brief dip into the massive, indoor, saltwater pool is an excellent way to wrap up the day.
Off-season Delight
Equally important, the common assumption is if if you want to see bears then visit Alaska. First, if you want to snow ski then go to Colorado. Maybe but maybe not. Second, how about an exotic ski experience under the magically gorgeous Aurora Borealis? Very few places can offer you the level of luxury in such an exotic and exciting place like this Alaska vacation resort. Some locals prefer the off-season. Those months of the year when the snow stops falling and the green grass appears. Far less crowded, the surrounding mountains resemble something out of a movie set like the Sound of Music.

The Alaskan homestead has become something of folklore. Consequently, it might be a fantasy world TV show creation where people live happy and free. Reality check! The term homestead is loosely defined. It means something very different than it did in 1880 or 1980. The Alaskan Homestead Act offers an interesting history worth reading.
The Shadowy Alaskan Homestead Definition
Today’s exciting homestead is best defined as a farm. A mid-sized farm at best. Furthermore, the farm resembles a hobby farm or micro-farm. The type where a single family owns a few acres where they raise small numbers of typical farm animals. They maintain what is likely less than a couple of acres with limited crop production. The ubiquitous greenhouse or high tunnel marks the site of the aspiring Alaskan homestead.
Reliability for Success
Most homesteads need a few basic items for success. The successful Homesteader requires a short but very serious list of items to be successful:
- Water source
- Off-grid power
- Reliable equipment
- Source of sustainable heating
First, sustainable source of fresh water might be the most important need for the Homesteader. Secondly, shallow well, found near a creek bed. It could provide more than you need. Solar panels are popular but only in Summer months. Wind generators help bridge the gap when the sun hangs low over The Great Land. Junk breeds junk. Reliable equipment means you have a better chance at success. The primary source might be firewood. Propane and heating oil are also popular, as a secondary source, where available.
Uncovering the Homesteading Mystery
The secrets to homesteading success are endless. Some dream of a tiny cabin deep in the wilderness. Others see a modest home on a few acres with modern amenities. Alaskan Bull Moose. The largest of the deer family. 1500 pounds, taller than a wild horse. Moreover, it carries hundreds of pounds of massive and deadly antlers. The Alaskan Bull Moose has a kick strong enough to kill a grizzly bear. All with a matching bad attitude. Consequently, the Alaskan Moose is tragically responsible for more serious injury and death, of humans, than all of the great bears.
Alaska is intimidating. Hunting the largest land animal in Alaska can be both terrifying and unforgettable. Success factors of a hunt include but are not limited to:
- Skill
- Luck
- Divine Providence
Hunting Alaskan Bull Moose is one of the most challenging and thrilling hunts in Alaska. As a result, the moose is the largest land animal in Alaska despite the ability to disappear like a ghost. The heavy moose hide is a blend of black, brown, gray, and white. blends in perfectly with the withering golden brown grasses, willows and alders, of the Autumn season. The massive antlers blend in perfectly with the endless dead trees and branches on the massive and unspoiled wild Alaskan landscape.
The Legendary Alaskan Bull Moose
This Alaskan Bull Moose checked in at roughy 57 inches, as measured by the local ADF&G officials. Absolutely legally taken in a relatively crowded recreation area of Alaska. The area is in close proximity to populated areas, with easy road access. Furthermore, is heavily hunted and popular among off road and ATV riders. Locals say this size of a bull is rare. Even so, he was with a herd of 6 moose. 3 cows and 3 bulls. One immature bull and one other bull that appeared to be the largest of all of them but was not accessible.
Our Unforgettable Memory
It is not about the bull. Alaskan Bull Moose hunting can be an intense experience. Brutal weather conditions. Freezing and painfully cold hands and feet. Endless hours of watching and waiting. The minutes and hours click by in painfully slow motion. Days of mind numbing boredom contrasted by minutes of adrenaline pumped focus then terrific cheers of success.
