Meet Bennett & Dawn

Hello from The Land of the Midnight Sun

Why Alaska

About us at Living My Alaska is what we created to share why we made this effort. Our greatest mistake was not dreaming big enough. That is what I told my Wife after my last day wearing a business suit. I was on my final transatlantic flight to a place I did not want to go to see people who did not care about me for a career I did not want to pursue. Five star hotels, first class flights to exotic places like Paris and Milan, prestigious job titles. Naturally, a great achievement to most but something was missing.

We had no idea that “dreaming big enough” would mean a humble log cabin home on the edge of one of the world’s last wild frontiers. Consequently, we traded our business suits for camoflauge. I now wear Xtratuff rubber boots instead of leather business shoes. Our plan was to shop more at the local thrift stores and no more Neiman Marcus. We traded luxury for freedom and it is the best move we ever made.

Alaskans say there is no bad weather just bad clothing. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is the key to success in the extremes of Alaska. As a result, we find joy in solitude. We find fortune in a  wild blueberry patch. We discovered our biggest dream is the simple life.

Living my Alaska

Living a life worthy of The Great Land.

The Sourdough says there is no bad weather just bad clothing. If only that were true. If we wait for good weather then we may never leave the house. A freezer full of salmon and a bear rug replaced my shiny new car and business suit. Smoked bear ham and fresh bear lard biscuits tastes infinitely better than escargot on the promenade in Paris.

Adventure begins where the road ends. Eventually, we surrender to being wet and cold. Proudly, we accept our grungy boots, and messy hat hair, like badges of honor. We hunt, we fish, we harvest, for our homestead, whenever we can. Our seasonal pursuit of wild caught and locally grown means an endless lifestyle of adventure. This lifestyle is never easy, often dangerous, frequently exciting, and always rewarding. The Great Land always provides. About us at Living My Alaska page shares why we do what we do.
